Head of Athena to the right, wearing a crested Attic helmet, decorated with three olive leaves over the visor and a spiral palmette on the bowl, and wearing a necklace and earrings., Owl standing right, head facing; behind, crescent and olive sprig with berry; before, legend AΘE; all within incuse square., Graded NGC AU Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5, full crest. Extremely rare specimen with a very round flan, extremely wide, with a full crest, a rarity! In excellent condition, with engravings still very pleasant for the eye.
These tetradrachms, struck in abundance during the Classical period, when Athens was the most important city in the Greek world, were often not very carefully made. Money-changers and cities everywhere had such confidence in the purity of the silver used, because these types were so well known, that Athens placed a quite low priority on the striking of the coins, particularly when it came to forging the coin flans. They were melted into a fairly round shape, but the main concern in the striking process was the weight of the flan (17.4g according to the Attic standard) and the impression of the portrait of Athena with the owl and the ethnic inscription ‘AΘE’ on the reverse, which gave the coin the confidence it needed to be traded. The great majority of tetradrachms flans were then very thick, not very circular, but with a weight that was always respected. As a result, it is extremely rare nowadays to find specimens with a complete portrait of Athena, with the crest completely visible, from the bottom of the helmet to the top of the head, as it was usually out of flan when these poorly produced silver flans were struck., AΘE

Tête d'Athéna à droite, coiffée d'un casque attique à cimier, orné de trois feuilles d'olivier sur la visière et d'une palmette en spirale sur le bol, et portant un collier et des boucles d'oreilles., Chouette debout à droite, la tête de face ; derrière, un croissant et un rameau d'olivier avec une baie ; devant, la légende AΘE ; le tout dans un carré incus., Gradé NGC AU Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5, full crest. Exemplaire rarissime au flan très arrondi, extrêmement large, avec le cimier complet, une rareté ! Également dans un excellent état de conservation, avec des gravures toujours très agréable à l’œil.
Ces tétradrachmes, frappés abondamment durant la période Classique, alors que la cité d'Athènes est la plus importante cité du monde grecque, étaient souvent peu soignés. Les changeurs et les cités de toutes parts avaient une telle confiance sur la pureté de l'argent présent, car ces types étaient parfaitement connus, qu'Athènes apportait une importance toute relative à la frappe de la monnaie, notamment lors de la forge des flans monétaires. Ils étaient fondu pour obtenir une forme assez ronde, mais l'importance de la frappe résidait avant tout dans la masse du flan (17.4g selon l'étalon attique) ainsi que l'impression du portrait d'Athéna et de la chouette avec l'ethnique "AΘE" au revers, qui permettait cette confiance lors des échanges. La grande majorité des flans des tétradrachmes étaient alors très épais, peu arrondis, mais avec une masse toujours respectée. Si bien qu'il est aujourd'hui extrêmement de retrouver des exemplaires ayant un portrait d'Athéna complet, avec le cimier complètement visible, du bas du casque jusqu'au sommet du crâne, puisqu'il se retrouvait la plupart du temps hors-champ au moment de la frappe sur ces flans d'argent peu soignés., AΘE
